For OS installation purposes I teamed up the WD Black 1TB with an Intel Core 2 Duo E4400, 2GB of memory and an ICH7-based motherboard with Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit operating system.
The drive ranks as the highest possible score, a 5.9 Windows Experience Index rating for data transfer rate.
Installing Windows Vista Ultimate took roughly 13 minutes from the time all user input had completed and the auto-install took over, until the final reboot and loading to desktop. That's the same amount of time it recently took to install the same OS to an OCZ SSD drive! Obviously the performance will be limited by the read speed of the DVD to some extent however the hard drive access speed plays a part as well.
Subsequent restarts take just 23 seconds from the BIOS splash screen until the desktop is fully loaded. That's nearly 10 seconds longer than the previously mentioned SSD drive, however still fairly snappy as far as traditional hard disk drives go.
On to final thoughts and conclusion.
