I installed the drive in my system, booted up and had to initialize it in Disk Management. After that, you need to partition and format the drive. I did the standard format which took almost five hours. I then ran error checking on the drive to search for bad sectors, which turned up clean.

To test the performance of each drive, I used three different HDD benchmarking programs: HD Tune 2.55, HD Tach 3.0.4.0 and SiSoft Sandra 2008.5.14.24. Each drive was formatted before each test was run. I will be comparing the Western Digital 1 TB drive against a Western Digital 74 GB Raptor 10,000 RPM 8 MB Cache drive. This should give us a good idea of how well a newer and much larger drive performs against a smaller, but faster spinning drive. Below are the results from my testing.
