True to claim, the SandForce 2281-equipped Vertex 3 produced some amazing results in our tests. It is by far the fastest 2.5” SSD that we have ever tested and even managed to outpace the RevoDrive X2 in select benchmarks. This is only the second SATA 6 Gbps SSD we have tested and it's clear that with this new controller, SATA 3 Gbps wouldn't even come close to handling this level of bandwidth
Even more impressive than the SandForce chip's performance is what OCZ has been able to do with the firmware. The controller in this drive is rated for 500MB/s read, 500MB/s write at 60K IOPS 4K Reads. In ATTO, the Vertex 3 was dead on with OCZ's claimed 550MB/s read, 525MB/s write. Even more impressive was the write IOPS in IOMeter 2008, registering an impressive 70,000 at 4K random aligned. This is 10K higher than OCZ claims – very impressive!
The fact that only 16GB (roughly 6%) of storage is set aside for over provisioning speaks volumes about the confidence that SandForce has in their new controller and its ability to keep the drive running fresh and snappy.
Despite everything we have seen here, it's important to remember that this is simply a preview of beta hardware and more importantly, pre-release firmware. This is great news however, as the drive performed exceptionally well here today and future firmware tweaks are only going to improve on this.
Expect to see the Vertex 3 available for purchase near the end of March in capacities of 120GB and 240GB with MSRP's of $249.99 and $499.99 respectively.
