Testing

For trying out the Vantec NexStar Universal Storage Adapter, I will be utilizing my Phenom II 955 Black Edition main rig with 4gb of DDR3, WIndows 7 Professional and plenty of USB ports. On the adapter end, I will be experimenting with a 2.5" laptop IDE, a 3.5" IDE hard drive and a 5.25" DVD Burner for the drive slots, and an XD and SD-HC chip for the card reader.

The memory cards were a simple plug-and-play procedure. Windows recognized each storage device immediately. Although I could get power to the hard drives, I only had one successful attempt at a true "hot-swap". It seemed that Windows was not automatically recognizing the device once plugged in. I have a feeling that this was an issue with Windows and not with the device. A restart always allowed each device to appear under "My Computer". After testing each hard drive, I tested out a couple of DVD burners that I had been having problems with. I have to say it was a world of difference being able to test these drives with such a long leash from the tower. The 12v/5v Molex power adapter came in especially handy, as I wanted to test some old fans and a set of cold cathodes I had laying around. All-in-all an invaluable tool to have around.
