Other than the addition of the word "Smart" on the heatspreaders, the new memory looks nearly identical to the Tracer Black we reviewed last month. Those with a keen eye may pick up on the fact that these Smart Tracers contain fewer LEDs along the top. The double-sided standard Tracers have two rows of 12, one on each side of the DIMM, for a total of 24 plus an additional eight on the bottom. These Smart Tracers use only a single row of 10 on top and just four on the bottom, all on one side of the DIMM only. Presumably this is because of the dual-color LEDs used, either red/green or the blue/orange we have here.
One detail I found strange is an apparent stress mark on one side of each DIMM, causing a white line to appear in the anodized black heatspreader. This was in the same spot on both sticks, and on the one side only. None of the other Crucial memory we've reviewed has exhibited this phenomenon, and fortunately this did not seem to cause any problems, but I felt it was worth pointing out.
Next let's get the Smart Tracers installed.
