Introduction

In the constant battle between processor giants Intel and AMD, the role of motherboard manufacturer is often overlooked. Many hardware buyers will compare motherboard features such as integrated graphics, support for HDMI or SPDIF and number of slots or ports, but more important to enthusiasts and overclockers are the capabilities of the chipset and the options available in the BIOS. These factors are often not readily apparent, especially when basing a purchase decision off pictures or a spec sheet on the manufacturer's website.

Today I have for review a new motherboard model from Biostar, the TF8200 A2+. This board is part of Biostar's TForce lineup, which are upscale versions of their regular motherboard series, featuring better components and more options for enthusiasts and overclockers. The TF8200 A2+ uses the GeForce 8200 design, part of nVidia's most recent release of 8000 and 700 series chipsets for AMD. While initially planned to coincide with AMD's launch of Phenom processors last year, the series release was delayed first through Q1 of this year, and later to Q2. As nVidia's aging 500, 6000 and 7000 lineups have been their only offerings for AMD users, none of which had full support for the latest quad core Phenom processors, AMD's own ATI-based chipset designs have been stealing much of the limelight.

Can Biostar and nVidia regain some ground and take back some of AMD's thunder? Read ahead to find out!
