Introduction

Last year at CES 2010, SilverStone announced that it would be consolidating their power supply lines into a single series, the Strider. That model name had been in use for years, however all of the newer Strider models feature 80Plus certification and modular cables, something the older units didn't offer. As we saw in our Strider Plus 600W and Strider Plus 750W reviews, SilverStone was able to increase efficiency on the new Strider line enough to capture 80Plus Bronze and Silver ratings for these units.

When Jakob visited SilverStone at CES 2011 last month, they had on display their latest series of Strider Gold power supplies, and we are happy to have for review today the 750W model. The 750W Strider Gold has many of the same specifications and features as the 750W Strider Plus (Silver) such as a 750W continuous rating at 40C, all modular cables, single +12V rail, 19dBA 135mm variable speed fan, 2200uF capacitors on the PCI-E cables and all the same protection features.

How the 750W Strider Gold differs from the 750W Strider Plus, aside from the name, is primarily in its greater efficiency. With an 80Plus Gold certification, the 750W Strider Gold can achieve at least 2% better power efficiency compared to the 80Plus Silver. The 750W Gold unit also offers a higher peak rating, 850W compared to 800W, and can handle slightly more load on the +12V rail, 62A continuous as opposed to 60A. It's also gotten a bit bigger and heavier as well.

Join us as we test out the SilverStone Strider Gold 750W and see what other improvements there may be.
