Introduction

Though DDR3 memory has been around for some months, DDR2 is still alive and kicking. Many of the memory manufacturers are still producing new 2 gig DDR2 modules with higher speeds and/or low latencies, and most of them are selling for really great prices. DDR3 is still out of reach for many, and those wanting a performance boost can pick up some great DDR2 memory. Also, newer games like Crysis prefer 4 gigs of memory, so the time is right to upgrade to a 4 gig kit.

The team at OCZ are among those manufacturers. The past couple of months have seen OCZ release several new DDR2 memory kits, including the one we are looking at today, a 4 gig version of their popular PC2-8000 5-5-5 Platinum Edition. Will we get the performance from this Platinum Edition memory that we have come to expect from OCZ?

The PC2-8000 Platinum Edition comes in this hanging blister pack in the familiar OCZ colors. It isn't hermetically sealed and is fully reusable.

*XTC (Xtreme Thermal Convection) heatspreaders optimize the thermal management of memory modules by promoting greater airflow by means of micro-convection throughout what is usually the dead air space inside conventional heatspreader designs. In this manner, build-up of heat is avoided and thermal dissipation of the memory components is offloaded more efficiently through the honeycomb design. At the same time, mechanical stability is maintained.
