Overclocking/Conclusion

I had no problem at all overclocking these OCZ modules. I was easily able to push the memory to 1,000 MHz @ 2.2v. Unfortunately, the trade off was in timings. In order to run 1,000 MHz the timings has to be relaxed to 4-5-5-19 2T. Despite the increase in operating frequency, the modules actually turned in worse benchmark results across the board ( ex: 122 MB/s slower in Sandra's Memory Bandwidth benchmark). This only further solidifies the fact that tight timings are very important when it comes to sheer performance.

Those curious to see how the memory scales once the overall CPU clock speed is increased will be pleased to know the results are very promising. Using the default 4-4-4-15 1T timings at a CPU clock speed of 3,600 MHz, I pulled the following results in Sandra's Bandwidth Benchmark.

On the opposite end of the spectrum we have tighter memory timings. I was able to run these modules at 4-4-3-13 1T which netted me a gain of 33 B/s in Sandra's Memory Bandwidth benchmark at the stock 2.4 GHz core clock speed.

Findings and Conclusion

The results seen here today speak clearly. When matched against a similar kit of Corsair memory, the OCZ outperformed it in nearly every benchmark. Granted, the margins were not staggering, but a win is a win, despite the Corsair kit's faster TRAS timing. The reason for this is the faster 1T Command Rate. Command Rates were important in DDR1 and it appears they are equally as important when it comes to the newer DDR2 standard.

Overall, OCZ has a great kit on their hands with plenty to offer for both the novice and advanced overclocker. Beginners will certainly benefit from the Enhanced Performance Profiles which ensures that end users will get the most out of their purchase. Advanced users are free to manually set timings and try for even better results. As with all of OCZ's memory offerings, this kit is backed by a lifetime warranty. And it doesn't stop there. With OCZ's EVP, you are free to push the memory voltage all the way to 2.3v without voiding this warranty.

In the overclocking department, this kit was able to go up to 1,000 MHz without much effort, but as the results showed, tighter timings ruled out over faster frequencies. As for aesthetics, this kit ranks in the top three of my all-time favorites. The glossy black XTC heatspreaders are both functional and beautiful! As of writing, both the Corsair and OCZ memory seen here today retail for $180.00 USD. At an identical price point, the clear winner here is OCZ's PC2-6400 kit due to its tighter 1T Command Rate.
