Testing

As far as testing goes, I wanted to cover both synthetic benchmarks as well as real-world performance. First up, we will tackle some synthetic benches, namely HD Tune and SiSoft Sandra 2007 SP1. Just so we have a reference point in these tests, I will be pitting the OCZ Dual SD card against Corsair's 2 GB SD card.

Even before testing it is already expected that the Corsair card will be the faster of the two, with its 133x transfer rate versus the 80x of the OCZ card. But, I still wanted to give you guys a general idea of where each card stands as far as sheer performance numbers go. Keep in mind OCZ's main selling point isn't its speed, but convenience factor.

Also, I will be testing the OCZ card both with the USB and the card reader interface. I will be using a Crucial Technology multi-slot card reader during testing. Each card was formatted between each and every test to ensure a clean starting point. First up, let's check out HD Tune.

As anticipated, the Corsair card took the cake as far as sheer speed goes. What I was more curious about, however, was whether the OCZ card would perform faster via the USB or card reader interface - and it appears, at least from this test, that the card reader route is a touch faster. I must admit, I would have guessed that the USB interface would be faster.

Anyhow, let's move on to SiSoft Sandra 2007 SP1, in which I ran the "removable storage" benchmark. Results below:

Sandra reports on test file sizes of 32kb, 256kb, 512kb, 2mb and 64mb. To save you from all of the repetitive data, we will simply look at the 64mb file results.

OCZ SD Card via USB

Read Performance : 13 operation(s)/min (14199 kB/sec, 94x)
Write Performance : 5 operation(s)/min (5461 kB/sec, 36x)

OCZ SD Card via Card Reader

Read Performance : 13 operation(s)/min (14199 kB/sec, 94x)
Write Performance : 5 operation(s)/min (5461 kB/sec, 36x)

Corsair SD Card via Card Reader

Read Performance : 18 operation(s)/min (19661 kB/sec, 131x)
Write Performance : 5 operation(s)/min (5461 kB/sec, 36x)

SiSoft Sandra seems to paint a different picture than that of HD Tune, with the OCZ card coming in at identical speeds via both the USB and card reader interface. Let's see how all of this pans out in real-world use...
