Introduction

Modular power supplies have been around for a few years and have grown very popular. Most enthusiasts pay at least some attention to cable management in their rigs, and a well designed modular PSU provides the opportunity for having less cables to deal with.

On more than one occasion, I've needed one more Molex connector and had to connect an extra cable just for that. I rarely use a floppy anymore, but when I do, I usually just leave it outside of the case and use a Molex-to-Floppy power adapter that I made. On the end of pretty much every power cable I've owned, there is a floppy power connector that I have to deal with. And if you use SATA optical drives, you end up having to use two SATA power cables, unless you happen to keep your optical drives in the lower bays, and still it is rare for a cable to reach both them and your SATA HDDs. I usually use one SATA power cable for my hard drives, and a Molex to SATA adapter for the SATA optical drive to prevent needing two SATA power cables.

Wouldn't it be cool to be able to build your own cable? A modular-designed power cable that allows you to use only the connectors you need, in the order that you need them? Nesteq has answered that call with their ECS series of power supplies. Today we will be looking at the Nesteq ECS 7001, a modular 700 watter that allows you to configure your power cables however you'd like.
