Testing/Conclusion

My hand rests nicely against the contours of the MX Revolution, making it very comfortable to operate. For "testing", I will be comparing the MX Revolution to the Logitech G7. I have been using the G7 for over a year now and have yet to find a mouse that I like enough to replace it.

Usage, Comparisons, Findings and Conclusion

I am happy to report that the MX Revolution works perfectly on the bare surface of my desk. I have run into several optical mice which can't track properly on the surface of my desk. Logitech's laser tracking system in the G7 and the MX Revolution have no problem tracking on this surface, which means I am not limited to the small space of a mouse pad.

First up I will cover comfort levels. Both mice are very comfortable under my hand. The G7 has more of a "solid" design that lacks the sharp curves of the MX Revolution. It is really hard to select a winner in this category, but I have to give the award to the MX Revolution simply due to the surface material used. The G7 uses a reflective plastic over the entire surface of the mouse, where as the MX Revolution makes use of multiple surface materials which lead to a better overall feel.

Both mice are cordless, so there can be no real winner in this category. Also, both mice seem to slide across the surface of my desk with the same amount of force. I suspect that both use a similar type of Teflon-like material on the mouse feet.

Next we will compare mouse buttons. The G7 has a single thumb button, while the MX Revolution has two buttons, and a Document quick-flip wheel. The two thumb buttons are programmed for "forward" and "back" which work great in Firefox. The quick-flip wheel works much like the Alt-Tab function but in a more graphical format.

Simply "scroll" up or down on the thumb wheel to pull up the Document Flip list. You can scroll through each program with the wheel and press in on the wheel to select that task as your active window.

Moving on, the MX Revolution has the high-tech SmartShift scroll wheel with left / right clickable functions. The G7 is a standard scroll wheel but does feature the left / right click functions. Clearly the MX Revolution wins out here. I can't stress enough how cool the SmartShift scroll wheel is. I tried going back to the G7 after just a few days of using the MX Revolution and the difference was like night and day. I am 100% hooked on the scroll wheel of the MX Revolution; yes, it is that good! Both mice feature LED battery status indicators. Power is supplied to the MX Revolution via a non-removable Li-ion battery that never needs replacing. Under a full charge, the battery in the MX Revolution should last up to 14 days. The removable battery in the G7 needs to be swapped out with a fresh battery every other day. Another victory for the MX Revolution.

So in the end, I think it's safe to say that the G7 has finally met its match. The MX Revolution has everything that I have been looking for in a replacement mouse and more! The SmartShift scroll wheel is one of the best features I have seen implemented in a mouse in a very long time. The overall look and feel of the MX is unrivaled. At a price of $89.99, in my eyes, the MX Revolution truly is the World's Most Advanced Mouse!
