The MUKii TransImp X3 Plus is one of many new USB 3.0 hard drive enclosures coming to the market. The TransImp X3 Plus is no ordinary enclosure and MUKii has designed the unit with a few bells and whistles that separate it from other enclosures on the market. Some of those features include a front lit LCD display that shows real time I/O rates, an attractive black aluminum case and a small but effective set of software tools.
The included software, called the M1 Tuning System, is a suite that includes a basic backup program, auto format (partitioning), smart energy saver, and a status message program (small box that pops up near the SysTray). MUKii also included a program that enables “USB Turbo mode” that touts improved I/O rates when enabled (more on this later). At the time of this review, the TransImp X3 Plus was not yet available for purchase, but MUKii supplied us with an MSRP of $57.99, so expect most shops to be selling these for between $40 and $50.
Out of the box, the unit is attractive and the enclosure itself is built with solid construction. Inside the box is the enclosure, mounting screws, an optional vertical stand for the enclosure, a USB 3.0 cable, power supply, basic manual and software CD. The enclosure comes open and ready to receive any standard SATA based 3.5 inch hard disk drive. Once powered on the LCD display will spring to life with an effective, but not over bearing, orange glow. All and all, the unit looks good and feels solid.
Let's move ahead and get right into installation.
