I'll be installing the LG drive into my main system, which is comprised of the following hardware:

AMD Phenom II 1090T X6 BE
Swiftech H20-320 Edge
2x2Gb Crucial Ballistix Tracer DDR3-1600
120Gb OCZ Vertex 2
1Tb WD Caviar Black
ASUS EAH5870 V2 1G
OCZ Fatal1ty 750w
Cooler Master HAF 932 AMD Edition
Windows 7 64bit Home Premium

The software CD that ships with the drive contains a variety of CyberLink products as well as a firmware update utility from LG. Users can select which components to install, but probably at a minimum will want the PowerDVD player and the ODD updater. Firmware updates are very important for optical drives particularly while standards are still being formalized and new revisions forthcoming. The program updated the LG WH08LS20 to firmware version 2.0 which is the latest available.

Now that the drive is installed and up to date, let's have a look at playback and recording functionality.
