Introduction

We have reviewed several external hard drive enclosures here at OCIA.net in the past. The majority of the enclosures we have tested used 3.5" hard drives. While most of the enclosures did perform their tasks as-advertised, there are still some people that find these 3.5" drives too bulky for everyday use. If you fall into the latter category, don't fret, as there are solutions available for you as well. Laptop hard drives are now being used in external enclosures instead of traditional 3.5" drives for a number of reasons. These drives are much smaller and generate less heat and noise than 3.5" drives. Write speed and capacity limitations were once a point of concern for laptop drives, but that is now a thing of the past. Today I will be looking at the Tagan Icy Box IB-266StUS-B, an external 2.5" drive enclosure that offers a variety of connection configurations and flexibility.

The Icy Box arrived in this attractive retail package. The box has pictures of the Icy Box on the front and sides, while the back remains blank. The printed text on the package is in English and German. A brief specs list can be found on the side of the package. Below is a complete features / specifications list, borrowed from Tagan's website.

The Icy Box can connect to your computer in three different ways: SATA connectivity via the included 3.5" docking station, eSATA (External SATA) or USB 2.0. Continue ahead as we open the box and get to work on the Icy Box...
