FSP Group is one of the few manufacturers that make their own power supplies, along with Seasonic and Seventeam to name a few. The Aurum Gold 500 that we looked at today is aimed at the general users / casual gamer with enough power to support most mainstream systems.
The unit is black in color with gold accents and a nice textured surface that should resist minor scratches and dings. There are no modular cables which means you will need a place to store all of the excess wires in your case. That is, if you are concerned with aesthetics and airflow. Additionally, there are plenty of connectors to go around for non-hardcore gaming systems. The main ATX power connector is backwards-compatible with 20-pin motherboards should you need this unit to replace a dead power supply in an older system.
The 80+ Gold rating is dead on with this unit, drawing less power than the recently reviewed Thermaltake Toughpower Grand 1050W, although that had more to do with the fact that we were running this unit in the "sweet" spot for efficiency. Other notable features include the quiet 120mm PWM controlled FDB cooling fan, 105C Japanese capacitors and a 5-year warranty.
If a hardwired power supply isn't your cup of tea, FSP Group recently announced the Aurum Cable Management Series which is essentially the same power supply with modular cables.
As of writing the FSP Group Aurum Gold 500 sells for $93.99 at Newegg, putting it in the upper echelon of 500w power supplies, price-wise.
