Did you create a new partition, and if so did you restart the machine before continuing the installation?

I guess this is like the old DOS fdisk requirement.

every time i try to do the last step in usb prep8 it fails and says failed to get the driver configuration. The number of secrets that may be stored in a single system has reached exceeded. What do I do?

Question Problem creating XP USB drive

I'm using a 2GB USB Drive and tried running the method recommended on the OCIA website, but hit a problem

Having selected 'usb_prep8' and entered the details in the PeToUSB window and formatted the Thumb drive I then proceeded to the next steps in the C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe window.

In the Command Window the following options then appear and as instructed, I entered the data in options 1), 2) and 3). as shown below.

0) Change Type of USB-Drive, currently [USB-STICK]
1) Change XP Setup Source Path, currently [C:\XP]
2) Change Virtual TempDrive, currently [T:]
3) Change Target USB-Drive Letter, currently [F:]
4) Make New Tempimage with XP LocalSource and copy to USB-Drive
5) Use Existing Tempimage withXP LocalSource and Copy to USB-Drive

When I Type '4' <ENTER> and the following appears :
Lets prepare a Temporary Virtual Drive ....
Closing existing Virtual Drives if any ....
Virtual Disk Driver for Windows version 3.1
http://chitchat.at.infoseek.co.jp/vmware/

**The Virtual Disk Driver is not installed.**
Existing Virtual Drives if any are closed
*********Existing tempimage.img File was found *********
Then a 'Windows' window appears :
Title : Delete Existing TempImage
Text : Would you like to Delete Existing tempimage.img? YES / NO

If I respond NO, then the following appears :
Return to Main Menu, Then First Rename your tempimage.img File. Press any key to continue. . .
Question : How do I Rename the 'tempimage.img' file?

Trying to go through the procedure again, I just keep going round in circles !!!

Having read the text above, (**) I went to the 'http://chitchat.at.infoseek.co.jp/vmware/' website and downloaded the Virtual Disk Driver and installed it according to the instructions in the Readme file, but this made no difference.

I would really appreciate some help with this problem.

At the end of the first page it states "After a bit, you will be asked if you would like USB-stick to be Preferred Boot Drive. Click "Yes"." in the dialog box that pops up, as you can see in the picture, it says "For mixed SATA/PATA config : Dont change migrate.inf". if you want to run a sata/pata configuration are you supposed to hit no?

Thank you for such clear instructions.

I had one problem though and you may be able to help me with it. In prepping the memory stick, I worked through all of the instructions and they worked as your article stated except for the second last one. I was not asked if I wanted the USB stick to be the preferred boot drive. I received a different dialogue box which stated that it hadn't copied some files and said "Copy template files to USB drive in about 15 minutes or Stop to end program for No. I chose the latter and I did get the last dialogue box asking if I wanted to unmount the drive. I did so.

When started a Dell optiplex on which I had used Gdisk to clean down, using the memory stick, , I was told that the NTLDR was missing which would lead one to think the boot area was incorrect.

I was able to use the HP utility to make a bootable flash disk but was unsure as to how to get a copy of XP on it

Any Ideas
